After lying neglected for almost two years the former Clare Lawn Tennis Club site has been resold, according to developer Tony Syrianos.
The site was purchased by Leasecorp in 2005, who had planned to build a supermarket and associated speciality shops on the land, but instead decided to offer it for sale two years later.
“We have given up with the tennis court land,” Leasecorp managing director Tony Syrianos said at the time. After being contacted by the Northern Argus last week Mr Syrianos confirmed the land had been sold to Adelaide company Urban 3 Developments.
Although Mr Syrianos said he believed the land was again earmarked for a large new supermarket, the Northern Argus has been unable to obtain confirmation of the plans.
Urban 3 Developments has not responded to calls, while an enquiry with food marketing company Metcash also produced no information at the time of going to press.
“They plan to build an independent large supermarket specialising in local produce of the area,” Mr Syrianos said.
“It will be the first to be rolled out into rural SA.”
Mr Syrianos said the supermarket would be a “Super IGA Fresh” store “bigger than both current supermarkets already in the town.”
Since first being sold by the Lawn Tennis Club there have been unfulfilled announcements that the land was earmarked for a Woolworths, then a Foodland supermarket development.
