The mystery of the huge standing stone which suddenly appeared near the Clare Skate Park was solved last week with the opening of the Hutt River Linear Boardwalk.
The stone of “Brownback” slate from Mintaro Slate Quarry, was the focal point of a commemorative plaque unveiling by His Excellency, Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce on May 6.
The Governor, who had originally been asked to open the Clare Valley Field Days, had been happy to schedule a three day visit to the Clare and Gilbert Valleys, attending various functions and meeting the community.
And the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council were pleased that he accepted an invitation to officially “open” the Boardwalk.
Students from St Joseph’s Primary School sang along to Advance Australia Fair to open the proceedings which was attended by members of the community, ALP Senator for South Australia Dana Wortley representing State Minister Paul Holloway and councillors.
Mayor Allan Aughey said the boardwalk was a wonderful example of collaboration and strong partnerships within the community and the State Government, and thanked the Sanders family for donating land for use as a park in 1983. The boardwalk was made possible through State Government grants.
