Skippers aim for world record

14/05/2008 10:48:00 AM
Children with skipping ropes may have jumped their way into a World record last Friday when they participated in a special event to celebrate the 25th birthday of Jump Rope for Heart.

The Guinness Book of Records attempt for simultaneous skipping in multiple venues was taken up with enthusiasm by children from Farrell Flat Primary School who skip daily as part of their regular physical activities.

Teacher Julie Baxter co-ordinated a combined skipping attempt at the Clare Oval, involving Watervale, St Joseph’s Clare, Vineyard Lutheran, Blyth and Clare schools – about 500 skippers.

The Torrensville Tigers demonstration skipping team conducted the warm-up and then gave a demonstration of skipping tricks.

Although all the numbers aren’t in yet, it is estimated that there were about 70,000 skippers Australia-wide, which would easily beat the record set in the UK in 2006 of 7632.
