Right brand of Tigers

26/06/2008 9:35:00 AM
The Tigers pulled off yet another magnificent win under the vibrant coaching style of injured skipper Scott Brand at Laura on Saturday.

Up against the might of Broughton-Mundoora, Southern Flinders went into the contest with high hopes.

And to their credit they never wavered from the single-minded attitude of winning at all costs that they carried onto the field.

Buoyed by the return of star teenage prospect Scott Mazzone from North Adelaide, the Tigers turned it on big time in front of the hometown fans who were there in their droves to witness the team’s fourth win in five games.

Big John McKenna lined up at half forward and was able to capitalise on a good forward movement by the Tigers midfield to goal off a set shot in the opening seconds.

It was only a minute later when Garry Hull kicked a super goal on the run to make it two on the trot.

Then for six minutes the cherry was traded faster than oil futures on Wall Street until a sensational conversion for full points by Matt Gale from the scoreboard pocket got the Eagles on the board.

Broughton-Mundoora knew they had problems when Mazzone was assigned to Zone representative Mark ‘Jack’ Horner.

But the star Eagle swooped after an agonising eight-minute period of pass the Sherrin finished when Lee O’Donohue executed a clever chip-pass from the left forward pocket to find Horner who held a juggling mark which he converted.

Horner scored again with a solid mark and goal from around the arc and they were back in business.

But Southern Flinders was not going to be denied in this game and Jeremy Edson got out on his own within range and was able to goal on the siren to send the side into the break leading by just two points.

Of some concern to coach Scott Brand was the Mazzone/Horner match-up and the pair spoke about it at quarter time.

Mazzone was confident he could stay with Horner and he convinced the coach to leave him there.

It paid off with Horner getting just one more goal for the match after kicking 10 against them last time around.

A seven goal to three second quarter saw the Tigers take a 30-point lead into the long break but it was all fairly even at lemon time after Broughton-Mundoora turned on some champagne football in a six-goal third term.

But the blue and golds ran out of luck after that, kicking just 4-6 from more than a dozen journeys inside their own 50.

John McKenna led the last quarter charge for the Tigers.

He only had three kicks but they were all goals.

Brogan Whitelaw – who starred all day across half forward and on the wing – also kicked a goal and so did Mazzone who stayed with Horner when he went to full back for a short while.

Michael Gaunt had a senior role to play in the backline and came up with over 30 touches to lead Southern Flinders’ best.

Nathan Cunningham was exceptional at full back, McKenna with five goals was a revelation after a quiet game last week, Mazzone was very good and Whitelaw was finally recognised for his above average contribution to this team.

Rhys Stanbridge kicked three goals while Hull, Whitelaw and Cam Edson got two each.

Young Eagle ruckman Josh ‘Cooper’ McCallum controlled the rucks and his stats back that up with him winning most of the centre clearances in conjunction with rover Aaron ‘Crutch’ Barclay.

Justin Tiller was good across half back, Nick Edwards played an important role rotating from the half forward flank to centre half back and first-gamer James Hewett came off the bench to a wing and looked terrific.

Matt Gale top-scored in the match with six goals from full forward, while Horner got three and Brad Mercer and Ash Lockwood got two each.
