Francis plays 400 for North Clare

As Brett Francis runs onto Clare Oval on Saturday he will clock up an enviable 400 club games for North Clare Football Club.

It is a great achievement for any player and having played most of his footy for the one club since he started at seven years old, just shows his dedication and loyalty to North Clare according to another club identity, Brian McInerney.

“He’s a very dedicated, loyal North Clare member,” Brian said.

“He’s played his 400 games and has also given back to the club as player and coach. His skills are second to none and he’s still a very integral part of the North Clare side at the moment - take Brett out of the side and there would be a very big hole to fill.”

While 400 games is impressive enough, Brett reckons over the years he has played in about 15 grandfinals in A and B grade and has only “lost one that I can remember”.

He won a colts best and fairest award as well as numerous runners-up to team mate Peter Cook, played association football as well as pulling on the boots for Central Districts for a while in under 17s.

But he says 1995 was one of his most memorable footy seasons, playing under one of his most influential coaches in Alan Stringer.

“The coach was Alan Stringer and we had probably the best side in the league in ‘95,” Brett said.

“I won the best and fairest in the A grade, won a premiership and played alongside the likes of Michael Voigt, Nick Ashby, Peter Cook and Shannon Bubner.”

Brett reckons it was the same year he achieved his most memorable footy moment.

“My favourite moment was when I kicked 10 goals off the half forward flank against Blyth here on the Clare oval. That, and of course all my premierships have all been favourite moments.”

Brett prides himself on being a team player and is admired by team mates for his impressive and silky football skills.

He has played all over the ground - starting in the half back flank and “everywhere since then” - and is now forward pocket in the North Clare B-grade side, who will line up against Min-Man on Saturday in the 2nd semi final at Clare.

Talking to Brett it is obvious he just loves “good old-fashioned footy”.

“I just love the challenge of playing footy and the people you meet doing it,” he said.

“You need to be skilful and fit and there’s always a challenge in it.”

At 37-years-old, Brett said he would be hanging up the boots after this season and looked forward to following his kids through their sport.

Having coached the North Clare A-grade in 2007 and the B-grade for two seasons previously, he said he had no immediate plans to return to coaching but certainly would not rule it out in the future.

In the meantime, he is enjoying being part of the B-grade side and hoping to end his footy on a high.

“I’ve been quite happy playing B-grade footy, any A-grader that doesn’t go on to play B-grade doesn’t know what they’re missing out on,” Brett said.

“The boots are going up after this year, 400 games for any club I thought was a pretty good achievement and hopefully we can get it together and I can go out with a premiership.

“I’ve got a passion for the North Clare footy club and that’s why I’ve stayed with them over the years, I’ve had other opportunities to go elsewhere, but it’s tough, it’s hard, it’s competitive and I love it.”
