Hunt Sunday was warm and inviting as a small but enthusiastic group gathered for the first official hunt of the season across the properties of Williams, Bertelsmeier and Weckert families.
Numbers were down on previous years as there were many other activities taking place around the valley, but this did not dampen the spirits of those who arrived at Tarangaree, Blyth, to kick off the season.
Many riders were returning for another season and some were joining the field for the first time.
As riders prepared their mounts, road followers enjoyed hearty conversation over a wee dram of port as is the hunting tradition. Welcome speeches and a toast to the land owners proclaimed the hunting season open.
Acting Master, Soraya Papesch led the field quietly off over an inviting run of low jumps that made for an appealing start for horses and riders feeling a little out of practice. Every one soon settled into a good steady pace, both horses and riders enjoying the open run and fabulous weather. Road followers were not disappointed as the horses jumped boldly, showing they were not as unfit as many had thought.
The hunt field broke on the hills above the Blyth plains, a spot that took full advantage of the magnificent view on such a fine day. Riders and followers enjoyed the scrumptious Stirrup Cup provided by Kent and Phoebe Bertelsmeier and a cool drink, discussing the ride they had had, with most people pleased with the day so far. Glasses were cheekily raised by the assembly in salute to Scott Weckert as he bypassed the socialising group, seeding the paddock in which Stirrup Cup was being held. He resisted the invitation for a quick libation, but at least the view from his tractor cab was a fine one. This naturally prompted the discussion of crops and rainfall for the season ahead.
The field remounted, with some riders already feeling a little stiff.
A short warm-up and the field were off again. A steady pace was once again established as riders made their way back along the inviting course.
Horses had begun to tire by the final run of fences, yet all seemed to regain strength as the field headed back toward the floats.
Mounts attended to, everyone enjoyed a well deserved sit down and a roast chicken and salad lunch followed by apple crumble and cream hosted by the gracious and evergreen, Effie Williams.
