Wendouree 2 d Balaklava 0
Wendouree started the game strongly and after the 2nd short corner William set up the shot for Isaac to score the first goal. Adam, Russell and Zenith worked effectively through the middle to set up Isaac’s second goal. Balaklava gathered strength and applied themselves with more force and commitment. Wendouree responded to this with some great tackling involving Chad, Rebecca and Kym. Spectators enjoyed watching some great stick work on the field. Josh in goalie prevented Balaklava from scoring with some very fancy foot work, kicking the ball out of Balak’s attack. Wendouree worked well together in the first half of this match keeping the half time score at two – nil.
The second half began with Adam moving quickly into a leading position to get the ball into Wendo’s attack. Alex and Peter ran well in the wings providing reliable support to keep the ball in the Wendo’s attack. Samuel, Chad and Alex had several attempts at goal during this half but were unsuccessful at scoring. Rebecca, Kym and Alex were strong in defence and kept returning the ball back into Wendo’s attack but neither team scored during this half and the final score was two – nil.
Burra 2 d Springstown 0
It was a tale of two goalies when these two teams met on a brisk Clare morning, a veritable David and Goliath contrast between the goals. For the first time this season Springstown seriously struggled to get the ball over their centre line and spent the majority of the first half defending their circle, with Burra leading two nil when the half time whistle blew.
The inspirational half time words by the coaching team sent Springy’s out with much needed spring in their steps and a more attacking stance on the ball. They worked on their short passes and their communication and defence was more solid. However it was not enough and despite their improved attitude, they could not convert their few attempts at goal. Burra played really well and were simply the better team on the day. As Springstown player Tom E said “we were like yellow sheep, always bunching up together”
The Caltex Roadhouse Incentive award went to Angus McGregor.
