Jamestown Races organisers will have a special reason to keep their eyes on the track after forming a syndicate to buy a racehorse so they could see it run at the event.
Four-year-old gelding Pelekunu Valley has been purchased by a local group of four owners, including Jamestown Racing Club’s chairman Michael Noonan and secretary Keith Hope.
Named after a Hawaiian landmark the horse has come from Lindsay Park Stud and has won at Cheltenham and trained by Ron Campbell from Gawler who has been a long time supporter of the Jamestown Races.
Pelekunu Valley will make his first start under new ownership at Jamestown on Saturday, October 4 and will provide “local” interest for racegoers.
Another attraction for racegoers is the annual Fashion on the Field event, which is always hotly contested.
A small team of spotters will move through the crowd throughout the day handing out sashes to worthy entrants in numerous categories of dress, ranging from the best to the weirdest outfit.
Sashed competitors will then make their way to the catwalk at the end of the last race for judging.
“And because we’re in the country the ‘catwalk’ is really a flat top semi trailer, kindly donated by Redden Brothers for the occasion,” races secretary Keith Hope said.
“It’s a very popular event. From the Racing Club’s point of view we recognise that a lot of people who come to the races are not interested in betting, but come as a social outing.
“Fashions on the Field fits the bill while also catering for those who love to frock up for the races - it’s our version of Oaks Day.”
