Main North Road still needs to be fixed

Main North Road still needs to be fixed

It is wonderful news that Anama Lane will be sealed and provide a more stable surface, and less ongoing repair work.

It’s an important freight route in the district and deserves attention.

But then, so does Main North Road – a road which not only carries many more trucks and passenger vehicles, but also serves as an important tourist route to the Clare Valley and on through the Mid North.

Governments have a funny way of distributing largesse – there are buckets for this and buckets for that.

The Federal Government passes money to the states, which in turn pass it on to local government (usually through another authority). It probably picks up some handy interest on the way, and some department is getting the windfall.

Some roads are deemed “local” and are the responsibilities of councils, who receive government grants to fix them up, topped up with ratepayer revenue.

Bigger roads belong to the State Government which uses money, again garnered from the road user through vehicle registrations.

The federal government gets its money, yes you guessed it, from the taxpayer.

So there we have three tiers of government spending money on roads, and one consumer paying three times for the privilege of driving on them.

With so much money going around there should be plenty to spare in fixing up Main North Road. If Anama Lane can be deemed important enough to attract major funding, then Main North Road should be too.

We know there are repair works and a new overtaking lane or so mooted for some of Main North Road’s southern section, but what about the rest of it.

If there’s money for a Northern Expressway, which is a relatively new idea, then there should be money to upgrade the Main North Road which has been waiting for attention for decades - but no such luck.

Urban sprawl means Adelaide has moved from Gepps Cross to Gawler - which again leaves the Mid North begging.
